The cello and contrabass duo composed by Rossini is a masterpiece of masterpieces among long forgotten compositions and is a work full of beautiful elements that could be called the acme of Italian cantabile. What brought it worldwide recognition was the skillful performance and recording by cello and contrabass virtuosos Baumann and Stoll of the Berlin Philharmonic.
The recording was made at the Teldec Studio in Berlin, which was formerly a wooden movie theater located near the Unter den Linden boulevard in the center of the city before it was divided into East and West Germany. It was remodeled into a studio, but the wooden floor was kept, providing a warm echo not possible with concrete—a unique characteristic of this studio at the time.
This is a famous analog recording by recording engineer Eberhard Sengpiel that marvelously captures the rich harmony between the cello and contrabass. The high quality music data conveys the true quality of the performance at the recording venue more clearly than ever. The roots of the Camerata label can be traced back to this recording.
